New Products Showcase

Finding ways to save time, labor and money are priorities in the nursery industry right now. So is finding more ecological solutions for production practices. Finding new products to offer the home gardener in the retail environment is a good thing, too.

The introduction of the New Product Showcase at the Farwest Show offers solutions to help your bottomline, improve the quality of your product, and possibly even the quality of the work environment. That's a lot to ask of a trade show Showcase but that is what we intend to do. To the best of our knowledge, these products are new to the U.S. market, introduced in either 2009 or 2010. In some cases, the products are debuting at the 2010 Farwest Show.

Visit the New Product Showcase and you'll see the products being used as intended, or full-scale models, or the product itself. If you see something you like, you'll find the exhibitor that wants to answers your questions and tell you more about it. If you can't make it to the show, you'll find contact information listed in the following pages.

Crystal Green® is the world's first slow-release, renewable and environmentally safe fertilizer with a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium (5-28-0+10Mg). With proven applications in turf, nursery, and specialty agriculture industries, Crystal Green can be substituted for any existing phosphorus source. The product is produced from a recycled and renewable source, with environmental advantages resulting from its production process, and zero impact on the water table due to its slow-release characteristics. The prill is a hard, crystalline material that is virtually dust-free, consistent in size and shape, and suitable for broadcasting, top dressing or incorporation. Wilco has begun incorporating Crystal Green in Plantacote controlled release fertilizer and its Optimus FG nursery fertilizer line. Its crystalline nature eliminates the possibility of premature release due to heat of the media mix. It is also available in various prill sizes. Third-party testing has shown longevity of up to eight months, saving time and money. Crystal Green debuts at the 2010 Farwest Show.

Eco Choice Pots

Eco Choice Pots

Eco Choice Pots are fully biodegradable, injection-molded nursery containers that look and perform like traditional plastic pots. These pots feature normal container longevity - they do not biodegrade in normal usage. Biodegrading occurs only after the pots are introduced into a landfill or compost with other biodegrading materials. The pots are produced in accordance with the ECM Certificate of Biodegradability issued to Anderson Die & Manufacturing in February, 2010. After degrading, containers do not return to the environment as small pieces, but as biomass and humus. The process is ecologically safe and involves no heavy metals. No special handling or storage is required. The 2010 Farwest Show will be the U.S. debut for Eco Choice Pots.

Geohumus

Geohumus is a natural soil amendment technology for water retention and release, increasing plant-available water up to 30 percent. The product combines organic polymer and mineral components into an odorless, sponge-like granulate that easily incorporates into soil mixes. Known to have a positive effect on soil porosity and plant yield, Geohumus is ideal for commercial greenhouse and container growers looking to conserve water during plant production and reduce nutrient leaching, and for growers selling their plants at retail facing challenges in keeping plants watered adequately. Geohumus has also proven valuable for landscape contractors wanting to increase the survivability of plants in less than ideal planting conditions and by homeowners looking to conserve water in their gardens as well as extend watering intervals in indoor plants. It is debuting at the 2010 Farwest Show.

Osmocote Pro with Fusion Technology

Osmocote Pro with Fusion Technology

Farwest Show Booth #5040, 6039

The new Osmocote Pro with Fusion Technology has been specifically developed for surface applications in container nursery stock. When applied as directed, the unique "Fusion Technology" works to bind the prills to the growing media. After the fertilizer is surface-applied and watered in, a polymer compound forms a web-like adhesive matrix that does not interfere with the release of nutrients to the plant. Rewetting the growing media through subsequent irrigation maintains the fusion activity, ensuring that the fertilizer will stay in place for an extended time. Should containers get knocked over, more of the fertilizer stays in place, minimizing the need for reapplication, reducing labor and additional fertilizer costs.

Developed by nursery professionals, Stretch-Tie™ is an expandable twist tie for staking trees and other plant material. Similar to a bread or garbage bag tie, it is made from expandable plastic with non-continuous metal so the stretch accommodates the growth of most plant material. Proven to be 50-60 percent faster than hand tying, and no machines will be lost, break, jam, or necessary to buy. The Stretch-Tie provides a tighter connection than machines with less reworking as the tree grows. U.S. and international patents pending.

The Quantum Irrigation Controller was designed for easy programming. Growers can irrigate multiple crops in one house at the same time using distance programming or magnets. Each job can be programmed independently and have its own start and stop times, repeat time, speed and multiple pass counts, reducing waste and labor costs. It also can be operated manually for spot watering. Additional features include keeping a machine log to show history of machine functions; humidity override; built-in safety features; ability to apply chemicals using a separate spray bar; and it can be installed with two spray bars - one for irrigation and one for mist. The result is crop uniformity, less shrinkage and improved plant quality.

The trimming unit provides consistent trimming for cone, cylinder or globe shapes and the digging unit produces different pot-size balls (#1-#10 size) for the unit pictured. This machine has the added advantage of being able to selectively root prune or dig plants in the field (no row running required). There is a larger unit available that can dig and prune larger plants. The 2010 Farwest Show will be the U.S. debut of the Steekmachine.

Treehuggers allow a newly planted tree to grow straight and develop its root system without scarring or damage to its bark, particularly useful in landscape situations. Made of rust-free galvanized materials for longevity, the system can be reused after each tree is established in the landscape. Adjustable legs from 30-61 inches in height work on any surface, even uneven terrain; tripod legs are staked to the ground for stability. The adjustable UVA-treated hard plastic (outside) and rubber (inside) collar accommodates 2 to 7-inch caliper trees. Treehuggers can be installed quickly and safely by one person without the need for long stakes, post drivers or ladders. Landscapers installing trees in commercial or residential projects, homeowners, nurseries, parks and municipalities, and golf courses will benefit from this new staking system that allows trees to move and sway naturally. The 2010 Farwest Show will be the first venue to showcase the product. Developed and manufactured in the U.S.
